What it is

The Optris CTi G5 is a two-piece infrared thermometer for accurate non-contact temperature measurement of glass from 122 °F to 3,002 °F (50 °C to 1,650 °C). It measures at 5.0 µm, the wavelength at which glass is effectively opaque, so the reading comes from the glass surface rather than through it. It is designed for flat glass, container glass, light bulb manufacturing, car glass production, and photovoltaic cell manufacturing. A compact 0.55 in (14 mm) sensing head connects by cable to an electronics box with programming keys, a backlit LCD display, and a built-in USB interface for setup via mobile phone or PC.

  • Temperature range: 122 °F to 3,002 °F (50 °C to 1,650 °C) across two models
  • Spectral range: 5.0 µm
  • Optical resolution: 14:1 (G5L), 20:1 (G5H)
  • Measurement uncertainty: ± (1% of reading + 2.7 °F / 1.5 °C)
  • NETD: 60 mK (G5L), 80 mK (G5H)
  • Response time: 90 ms (G5L), 70 ms (G5H)
  • Sensing head: 0.55 in (14 mm) diameter × 1.10 in (28 mm) length; up to 185 °F (85 °C) ambient
  • Environmental rating: IP65 (NEMA-4). See the note in the Specifications tab
  • Outputs: two analog outputs (0/4–20 mA, 0–5/10 V, thermocouple K, alarm); built-in USB
  • Power supply: 8–30 V DC / 1.2 W

At a glance

5.0 µm spectral range purpose-built for glass temperature measurement

122 °F to 3,002 °F (50 °C to 1,650 °C) across two models

14:1 or 20:1 optics on a 0.55"/14 mm sensing head

60 mK NETD with response times from 70 ms

Wavelength

5.0 µm for glass

Glass is effectively opaque at 5.0 µm, so the sensor reads the surface temperature rather than seeing through the material to whatever sits behind it.

Range

Up to 3,002 °F

The G5H reaches 3,002 °F (1,650 °C) at 20:1 optical resolution, covering melt and forming temperatures.

Noise

60 mK NETD

Typical NETD of 60 mK on the G5L and 80 mK on the G5H, with response times of 90 ms and 70 ms.

What it is used for

Some of the use cases for the Optris CTi G5 include:

  • Flat glass production: temperature measurement of flat glass.
  • Container glass production: measuring container glass during manufacturing.
  • Car glass production: temperature monitoring in automotive glass manufacturing.
  • Light bulb manufacturing: measuring glass temperatures in bulb production.
  • Photovoltaic cell manufacturing: temperature measurement in solar cell production.
  • Tight installations: mounting the 0.55 in (14 mm) head where space is limited, with the electronics box sited remotely.

The model range

The two models split by temperature band and optics. The G5L covers 122 °F to 1,832 °F (50 °C to 1,000 °C) at 14:1 and is the quieter and more repeatable of the pair, at 60 mK NETD and ± 0.36 °F (± 0.2 °C). The G5H extends to 3,002 °F (1,650 °C) at 20:1 for tighter spots at distance, trading some noise performance at 80 mK and ± 0.9 °F (± 0.5 °C). Where your process sits inside both bands, the G5L gives the better reading.

Temperature ranges are scalable via the programming keys or software and app. Full optical, electrical, and environmental data is in the Specifications tab.

Why engineers pick it

Made for glass. The 5.0 µm spectral range reads the glass surface rather than through it, across flat, container, car, and bulb glass, plus photovoltaic cell manufacturing.

Up to 3,002 °F. The G5H measures up to 3,002 °F (1,650 °C) at 20:1 optical resolution.

Simple setup. Programming keys, a backlit LCD display, and USB setup via phone or PC.

Flexible integration. Two analog outputs, three programmable I/O pins, and optional industrial Ethernet, fieldbus, and relay interfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the CTi G5 as a 2-wire sensor?

No. Do not connect a supply voltage to the analog outputs, as this will destroy the output. The CTi G5 is not a 2-wire sensor. If you need a two-wire device, review the Optris CSmicro series instead.

What distance-to-spot size ratio is correct for my application?

The size of the measuring object and the thermometer's optical resolution determine the maximum distance between the sensing head and the object. To prevent measuring errors, the object should fill the field of view of the optics. The spot should always be the same size as the object or smaller.

Can I shorten the cable between the sensing head and the electronics box?

On the CTi G5 the sensing head cable can be shortened by a maximum of 9.8 ft (3 m).

How do I exchange the sensing head?

Heads are connected and calibrated at the factory. Any exchange of sensing heads and electronics is possible within a given model group. Every head carries a specific calibration code printed on the head cable, and that code must be stored in the electronics box for correct temperature measurement and sensor functionality.

How can I improve the noise amplitude of the sensor?

Do not move the head cable during measurement. Use shielded cables only and ground the sensor shield. Avoid ground loops and related signal interference in industrial environments. It may be necessary to interrupt the ground connections inside the electronics box by switching the internal jumper to another position. Review the manual before doing so.
