What it is

Espec drive-in chambers are custom environmental rooms built for testing vehicles and other large, drivable or rollable equipment. Each system is engineered around the facility, the vehicle, and the test method, with heavy-duty flooring to carry vehicles, large doors for drive-in access, and a Drive-in Modular Air Plenum (MAP) sized with larger refrigeration and extra airflow. Espec adds the interfaces a vehicle test needs, from chassis-dynamometer and road-simulator floor cutouts to infrared heating and running-engine air handling.

  • Custom-built for vehicle and large-equipment environmental testing
  • Heavy-duty flooring to support vehicles (up to 1,500 psf distributed, 2,500 lb point)
  • Large drive-in doors
  • Drive-in MAP conditioning — three blower wheels and larger C-frame refrigeration
  • Typically panelized construction (solid available when required)
  • Temperature and humidity conditioning per application
  • Interfaces for chassis dynamometers and four-post road simulators
  • Infrared radiant heating and running-vehicle fresh-air and exhaust systems available
  • P-300 touch-screen controller

What it is used for

Drive-in chambers reproduce real-world vehicle environments:

  • Full-vehicle environmental testing — temperature and humidity testing of complete vehicles
  • Squeak, buzz, and rattle (SBR) — combined with a four-post road simulator to accelerate SBR development in a harsh environment
  • Cold-start and thermal stress — from cold-start to high-heat testing of running vehicles
  • Durability under environment — mechanical durability testing while conditioned
  • Multi-vehicle workflows — rooms sized to hold more than one vehicle, for example one preconditioning while another is under test

How it is built

Custom construction. Drive-ins are typically built with panelized construction, or solid construction when test requirements demand it, and each is customized to the client's simulation needs.

Heavy-duty floor. Flooring supports vehicles and can be recessed into the lab floor for flush, ramp-free loading; custom floors accommodate the moving base of a four-post simulator for different wheelbases.

Drive-in MAP. A dedicated conditioning plenum with three blower wheels and larger C-frame refrigeration provides the airflow and capacity a large room and heat load require.

Vehicle-test interfaces. Chassis-dynamometer or four-post road-simulator floor interfaces; infrared lighting systems (banks of 250 W or 375 W lamps, proportionally controlled, adjustable in height and angle, with a wet-cycle option for humidity during IR); and running-vehicle support that conditions incoming fresh air and safely extracts exhaust.

Why engineers pick it

Designed around the vehicle and the facility. Espec engineers each drive-in to the available space, the vehicle, and the test, including recessed floors for flush loading.

Real-world simulation in one room. Temperature, humidity, road simulation, radiant heating, and running-engine support can be combined.

Built for the load. Heavy-duty flooring and large doors carry and admit full vehicles.

Reliable conditioning at scale. A larger drive-in MAP with Copeland compressors and a choice of water or air cooling holds conditions under heavy heat loads.

Configuring and ordering

Every drive-in is a custom system. Size, construction (panelized or solid), temperature and humidity range, floor rating, doors, and vehicle-test interfaces are all engineered to the application. Options include air-flow distribution and ceiling plenum, additional windows and observation, cable ports, infrared lighting, rain spray, fresh-air and exhaust for running vehicles, gas monitoring, and an emergency-stop system with interior pull-cord.

Because every drive-in is a custom system, the Specifications tab shows general reference data. Tell us your vehicle or equipment, the test method, and your facility constraints, and W5 Engineering will design and quote the drive-in system with you.
