What it is

A programmable single-channel DC electronic load in two 300 W models: the PEL-3031AE at 1 … 150 V / 60 A and the PEL-3032AE at 2.5 … 500 V / 15 A.

Inherited from the PEL-3000A Series, the PEL-3000AE keeps the easy-to-read LCD panel and user-friendly interface, with high-speed, accurate measurement for low to medium power products. Current sink operation starts from 60 mA.

  • Two models: PEL-3031AE (150 V / 60 A / 300 W), PEL-3032AE (500 V / 15 A / 300 W)
  • Seven operating modes: CC, CV, CR, CP, CC+CV, CR+CV, CP+CV
  • Static, Dynamic, and Sequence functions: Normal Sequence and Fast Sequence (25 µs minimum step)
  • Soft Start to set the rise time of current sink
  • Battery test automation, OCP and OPP autotest functions
  • 10 preset data sets
  • Protection: OCP, OPP, UVP, OVP, OTP, RVP
  • Trigger in/out terminals (BNC), current monitor output, and analog external control
  • Interfaces: USB and LAN standard; GPIB optional; RS-232 and RS-485 standard (manufacturer installed only)

What it is used for

Some of the use cases for the PEL-3000AE Series include:

  • Chargers and adapters
  • Various power supply equipment
  • Portable chargers
  • Electronic components and batteries
  • Simulating real load waveforms, such as a power-driven tool's power supply, through the sequence function, etc.

What does the PEL-3000AE Series do?

The PEL-3000AE Series is designed for current sink operation starting from 60 mA and aims at measurement applications including chargers, adapters, various power supply equipment, and portable chargers.

It has seven operating modes. Four basic modes are constant current, constant voltage, constant resistance, and constant power; three combined modes are constant current + constant voltage, constant resistance + constant voltage, and constant power + constant voltage. In CC mode the load sinks a constant current according to the set value. In CV mode it sinks sufficient current to control the source voltage to the programmed value. In CR mode it sinks a current linearly proportional to input voltage according to the set resistance. In CP mode it sinks power (load voltage × load current) according to the programmed power setting.

The Static function sinks a constant current, the Dynamic function periodically switches between two sink conditions, and the Sequence function tests more than two sink conditions. Normal Sequence builds complex sequences of changing sink conditions (CC, CR, CV, or CP) with times adjustable from 1 ms to 999 h 59 min 59 s. Fast Sequence sets steps with a time resolution of 25 µs, simulating consecutive current changes of real load conditions. For example, waveforms captured from a power-driven tool with an oscilloscope and current probe can be edited into simulated current waveforms to test the tool's power supply. Soft Start sets the time required to reach the set current, resistance, or power value.

Why engineers pick it

  • Replays a real load profile. Fast Sequence steps down to 25 µs, so a current waveform captured from an actual device can be edited and played back against its power supply.
  • Two ranges per model. Each model has a Low and a High range, so the PEL-3031AE resolves 0.2 mA on its 6 A range while still reaching 60 A.
  • Gentle on the source. Soft Start sets the current rise time at load turn-on, reducing the abnormal voltage drop a sudden load puts on the supply under test.
  • Automated tests built in. Battery test, OCP autotest, and OPP autotest run without external scripting.

Which PEL-3000AE model do I need?

ModelPowerVoltageCurrent (Low / High range)Min. operating voltage
PEL-3031AE300 W0 … 150 V0 … 6 A / 0 … 60 A1 V (6 A / 60 A)
PEL-3032AE300 W0 … 500 V0 … 1.5 A / 0 … 15 A2.5 V (1.5 A / 15 A)

Choose the PEL-3031AE for low-voltage, high-current work such as chargers, adapters, and battery packs. Choose the PEL-3032AE for high-voltage sources up to 500 V. Both deliver 300 W and share the same chassis, functions, and interfaces.

When is the PEL-3000AE the wrong choice?

  • Power above 300 W. Both models are rated 300 W. For higher power, the PEL-3000A/AH Series reaches 1,050 W per unit and 9,450 W with boosters.
  • Parallel operation or boosters. The PEL-3000AE is a single-channel load without the parallel and booster capability of the PEL-3000A/AH Series.
  • Sources below the minimum operating voltage. The PEL-3031AE needs 1 V at full current, and the PEL-3032AE needs 2.5 V.
  • Field-added serial interfaces. RS-232 and RS-485 are standard but manufacturer installed only, so they cannot be added later.

PEL-3000AE FAQ
