What it is
The Equilam NA SSe is a salt spray (salt fog) test chamber for accelerated corrosion testing of metal parts and coated components to ASTM B117, ISO 9227, JIS Z 2371, and ASTM G85 A1. It atomizes a salt solution into a fine, evenly distributed fog that settles over the specimens, so a lab can run rapid, repeatable corrosion tests for quality control, qualification, and specimen comparison. The SSe series is a monoblock design, with the solution tank and the bubble tower (saturator) integrated into one unit, offered in five benchtop/floor sizes from 14.7 to 135 cu ft (415 to 3,840 L) and in walk-in (WSSe) sizes, with custom dimensions on request.
- Accelerated salt spray (salt fog) corrosion testing
- Standards: ASTM B117, ISO 9227, JIS Z 2371, ASTM G85 A1 (also ASTM B368, DIN 50021)
- Neutral salt spray (NSS) and acidified salt spray (AASS / CASS) per the applicable standard
- Indirect fog atomization on the Venturi principle for even top-to-bottom distribution
- Monoblock construction: solution tank and bubble tower (saturator) integrated
- Fiberglass construction (U.S. Patent 10,371,623)
- Benchtop/floor sizes 14.7–135 cu ft (415–3,840 L); walk-in (WSSe) sizes available
- Assembled, maintained, and calibrated in the U.S.
What it is used for
The SSe chambers serve quality control, qualification testing, and specimen comparison across many sectors:
- Automotive and renewable energy — component and assembly corrosion testing
- Coatings, paints, and varnishes — evaluating organic or inorganic coatings on metal parts
- Construction, plastics, aviation, oil and gas, electronics — corrosion qualification of parts and enclosures
- Metallurgy and chemical industry — corrosion-resistance studies and material comparisons
- Neutral and acidified salt spray — continuous NSS, and AASS/CASS testing per the applicable standard
Exposure and standards
The chamber performs the traditional salt-spray techniques and is built to the standards' repeatability and reproducibility requirements:
- Neutral salt spray (NSS) — ASTM B117, ISO 9227, JIS Z 2371, DIN 50021
- Acidified salt spray (AASS / CASS) — per ISO 9227 and ASTM G85
- Acetic-acid salt spray — ASTM G85 Annex A1
- Construction reference standards — ASTM B117, ASTM B368, ASTM G85 A1, ISO 9227, JIS Z 2371
How it produces repeatable results
Equilam's design targets the uniform, standard-compliant fog these methods require:
- Indirect heating. The chamber is heated indirectly through a water jacket or air space; electric heating elements inside the internal chamber are not used, keeping the exposure uniform.
- Fog, not droplets. The atomizing nozzle produces a fine fog on the Venturi principle (ASTM B117), not droplets; peristaltic pumps are not recommended, and bubble-tower pressure sets the atomization flow.
- Indirect, even distribution. ASTM, ISO, and JIS require the saline solution to be atomized indirectly over the samples, never directly. Fog is distributed evenly from top to bottom, with a fog dispersion tower and cone recommended for uniform, constant collection.
- Monoblock design. The solution tank and the bubble tower (saturator) are integrated into a single unit.
- Hard, smooth, angled lid. The lid has a smooth internal finish and a 90–120° angle, in a material hard enough to resist scratching from salt crystals, so condensate does not drip onto specimens.
- Chamber-size homogeneity. Internal chambers smaller than 14.2 cu ft (0.4 m³) can cause undesirable effects in fog distribution, temperature, and turbulence, and leave too little space between the inner walls and the specimens (ASTM B117).
Selection and usage guidance
Keep a neutral salt spray chamber dedicated to NSS. If a neutral salt spray chamber is used for an acid test (AASS / CASS) or any solution other than those specified in ASTM B117, ISO 9227 (NSS), or JIS Z 2371, the chamber becomes chemically contaminated, and the reverse is also true. Returning a chamber to neutral salt spray requires a full cleaning procedure until the pH meets the standard and the chamber's corrosivity is re-verified; per ISO 9227, that decontamination is difficult and nearly impossible to fully achieve. Plan a separate chamber for acidified testing rather than switching one unit between NSS and acid methods.
For cyclic wet/dry/humidity profiles, use the cyclic model. The SSe runs continuous salt fog; for programmable cycles that alternate salt application, humidity, and dry-off to correlate more closely with real weathering, the Equilam C.C.T cyclic corrosion chamber is the corresponding model.
Utility and consumable requirements
Facilities planning needs three controlled inputs:
- Salt / corrosive agent. Salt (NaCl) purity limits and undesirable-element concentrations must meet ASTM B117, ISO 9227, and JIS Z 2371 (Equilam CORRO SALT).
- Water. Water must comply with ASTM D1193 Type IV (maximum 5 µS/cm); deionizers are recommended.
- Compressed air. The compressed-air supply to the bubble tower (saturator) must be free of grease, oil, and dirt (filtered) and maintained at sufficient pressure at the base of the bubble tower.
Choosing a model and ordering
The SSe series spans five benchtop/floor sizes and five walk-in (WSSe) sizes, with custom dimensions available on request; walk-in chambers are panelized, so sizes can be tailored. Every SSe model meets the 14.2 cu ft (0.4 m³) minimum internal volume for uniform fog distribution. Walk-in models add wide door clearance for large parts and full assemblies.
Full dimensions and volumes are in the Specifications tab. Select the model that fits your test standard and specimen size, and configure your unit on this page.
